Title: By The People
By The People is the title for an exhibition that originated in Washington, D.C. For this design, I took the liberty of moving this exhibition from the Cooper Hewitt Museum in D.C., to the MET museum in New York City. I moved the exhibition to New York City because the abundance of people living in the city creates a strong sense of community between neighbors. The cost of living is high, and more people rely on each other for greater living conditions in the city. By The People, is an exhibition showcasing the overall idea that communities can come together to improve their society and have a positive outlook in the world. I chose to do hand-drawn symbols to express the act of creating ideas and make use of those ideas to better the economy. I chose to do the background in an orange and blue watercolor gradient to hint at the possibility that society, with the help of communities coming together, will improve. Blue is a calming color while orange is a happy color. Together they create a positive outlook for society.
I created a digital publication to accompany the print version. This provides the people who have not been to the exhibition the opportunity to view what they are missing. The publications are fun and playful much like the show itself.
Since most exhibitions in museums offer souvenirs for guests in their gift shop, I decided to create wrapping paper to show a quilted pattern of these hand-drawn symbols. Hopefully patrons will remember that problems for society will get better if we rely on one another to facilitate change as a whole.
